Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010) is one of the most significant artists of 20th century China. His distinctive style fuses Western and Chinese art traditions, and set a new direction for modern Chinese art. A prolific painter and writer, his works paved the way for younger generations of artists and continue to inspire many to this day.

Wu Guanzhong: Expressions of Pen & Palette invites you to step inside the artist’s expansive world of painting and literature. It explores for the first time the intimate relationship between Wu’s words and paintings through an intimate selection of works from the National Collection and major private collections.

吴冠中在1919年出生于江苏省宜兴县，与新加坡有深厚渊源。2008年9月，高龄89岁的吴冠中将个人113幅，当时价值约6600万新元的画作捐给新加坡美术馆，在中国和新加坡引起很大反响。

在2009年中国美术馆举办的“耕耘与奉献——吴冠中捐赠作品”中，有其精神父亲鲁迅的形象与野草共生出现在作品《野草》中。吴冠中说过，“鲁迅我是非常崇拜的。我讲过一句很荒唐的话：300个齐白石比不上一个鲁迅。那时受到很多攻击，说齐白石和鲁迅怎么比较。我讲的是社会功能。要是没有鲁迅，中国人的骨头要软得多”。

吴冠中把自己多年对美术的思考写成了《绘画的形式美》《造型艺术离不开人体美》《关于抽象美》等文章，系统地阐述自己的观点，提出要打一场“创造新风格的美术解放战争”。1992年，吴冠中所写的《笔墨等于零》在明报周刊上发表以后，在美术界引起广泛关注。
