Reframing Modernism: Painting from Southeast Asia, Europe and Beyond
Organised by National Gallery Singapore and the Centre Pompidou, Paris
31 Mar–17 Jul 2016 | Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery
Singaporeans/PRs $15, Non-Singaporeans $25. Concessions available.
Reframing Modernism is the Gallery’s first international co-curated exhibition. Organised with Centre Pompidou, Paris, this show draws on over 200 iconic works by 48 modern artists from Southeast Asia and Europe. Drawing parallels in concepts, styles and approaches to modernism, it invites us to reconsider how artists working in different contexts approached modern art and modernism in the 20th century.
The inaugural exhibition at the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery, it focuses on the practice of individual artists, and how they can be connected to one another. Structured as a network, visitors can trace one artist’s work to another to explore and examine connections between artists working in different parts of the world. For the first time, view modern masterworks by Southeast Asian artists such as Le Pho, Cheong Soo Pieng and HR Ocampo, alongside treasures from the Centre Pompidou collection such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse and Vassily Kandinsky.
Reframing Modernism complements the narrative of Between Declarations and Dreams: Art of Southeast Asia Since the 19th Century by presenting a more in-depth exploration of individual artist’s practice and by connecting their practice with the wider global context. The exhibition will draw upon collections from both the National Gallery Singapore, Centre Pompidou and private and institutional collections in the region.
